Veggies Are Great on the Grill



With Father’s Day just around the corner, grilling season is officially here. Maybe you already dusted off the tongs for the Memorial Day holiday and grilled up some burgers for the family.

Besides meat, what else is great on the grill? Vegetables! And right now, here at Newcastle Produce, we have a terrific selection of veggies that taste delicious when grilled.

SQUASH
Squash are a great summer veggie. They pack a bunch of nutrition into a low–calorie and yet very tasty package.

Some of Jan’s favorite squash are round zucchini. Dark green, pale green, and yellow globes—these are all variations on the same delicious theme. The pale green one is Ronde De Nice, a French zucchini that is about the size of a tennis ball. With subtle dark lines on its gorgeous pale-green skin, this squash is a favorite of chefs because of its mild, sweet flavor and firm texture.

These squash not only taste great grilled, but you can also stuff or sauté them, or grate them up and add to eggs or salads.

We have a great selection of locally grown squash now, so come in an plan your next grilling menu with squash on the side.

ONIONS
Onions are always a star on the grill. And Twin Brooks Farm’s own sweet onions are just coming into season now. Thickly slice up some Stockton Reds, Walla Wallas, Placer Sweets, or Italian Torpedoes, and grill them for a fantastic side dish to your BBQ. (The leftovers are great in next morning’s scrambled eggs!)
