Honor Mom by Eating Well
Ever since you were a wee one, your Mom has probably been hounding you to eat well. Clean your plate. Eat your vegetables. Well, here at NP, we think a great way to celebrate Mom is to show her you were listening to that sage advice.
When you stop by our store, you can pick up all kinds of healthy and delicious foods that would make Mom proud, like organic milk, gourmet cheeses, delicious gourmet foods from the deli, and tons of vegetables and fruit that are in season now, including lettuces (red leaf, green leaf, batavian, red & green butterheads, red oakleaf, and romaine), beets, cabbage, and the divine local strawberries we wait for all winter long.
On Jan and Francis’s own Twin Brooks Farm, they are picking green garlic now, one of the first crops of the new season. Green garlic is an immature garlic plant, a garlic scallion if you will, and the whole plant is usable. Cathy is keeping the deli stocked with green garlic pesto (Check out our online recipe archive if you want to make it at home). She is also making daily a green garlic pesto tortellini salad with cherry tomatoes, parmesan, and capers—A perfect lunch! For more specials, check the calendar on the back of the newsletter.
Jan and Francis have also started picking the first kohlrabi, which is a member of the cabbage family and has all the same great health benefits. This bizarre looking vegetable produces a swollen stem that grows just above the ground. Peel it, slice it and serve raw with a dip or toss into salads. Or try the recipe below!
LOOKING AHEAD
We are on the brink of the bounty of summer, and our store will be soon stocked with even more varieties of local produce.
On the farm, Francis and his crew are furiously preparing planting beds, transplanting lettuce, tomatoes, squash, and more to help you and your family eat well and make Mom proud all summer long.
